Florida Department of Transportation
(Artwork #118)
Miami, Florida
Size: 8' x 8' (four panels)
This Percent For Art project was created for the Miami District Office Addition at the F.D.O.T. The primary purpose of the colorful piece is to bring joy to the viewer, although specific elements are woven into the design. The gracefully flowing lines reflect highways as they might be drawn on a map. The organic forms, created by the coloration, represent the natural environment. The highway lines flow next to and through the natural environment, connecting our urban hubs. The straight lined border, with its city block feel, acknowledges the city, and the role highways play in the efficient movement between them. An area of clear glass towards the center bottom retains the pleasant view of the surrounding countryside, a familiar sight, which invites the viewer to enter into and through the artwork. The wide lead lines within the border frame that view, much as an artist would frame a view with his hands.
Without knowledge of the Department of Transportation concepts within the design, the viewer will form his own interpretation. The movement of the graceful lines could bespeak the rhythms of the sea, a comfortable association for Miami. Likewise, the mouth blown rondels could easily be seen as aquatic in form. Freedom of interpretation is a beautiful quality inherent to abstract artwork.
