Thoughts behind the Daily Mass Chapel:
- The rising sun, "From the rising of the sun to the setting thereof, may the name of the Lord be praised."
- Beacon of faith. The red form is the base of the beacon. The radiant lines of the beacon's light energetically reach outward to the community, welcoming, drawing people in. Evangelism.
- Colors are light , bright morning colors.
- The gray border, suggests shelter, safety. At the same time it only follows three sides of a box that has been cut open by the architecture. This suggests that the light cannot be contained, it must and always will shine brightly.

Old St. Mary's Catholic Church - Day Chapel
(Artwork #120)
-
Chicago, Illinois
This eastern facing Day Chapel window incorporates a beacon theme, a light on a hill, reaching out to a community of great diversity. The colors of the rising sun are strong, engaging the viewer, inviting them to come into this place of safety and comfort. This window is the eastern portrayal of the 113 th Psalm: “From the rising of the sun to the setting thereof, may the name of the Lord be praised”. The Ambulatory window located at the opposite (western) end of the building in the main sanctuary completes the verse by representing the setting sun. In the Day Chapel window, the colors lend a bright, energetic ambiance to the space. The blue-gray border follows three sides of a box that has been cut open by the architecture, suggesting that the light can be neither contained nor extinguished. Opak glasses block the busy road view.
All the glass has been artistically manipulated with acid etching, enamel painting, and traditional glass paints. The art glass had to work visually from both sides of the window since it faces motorists on Michigan Avenue. The window is brightly lit at night, vividly proclaiming the beacon theme. Various widths of lead came create a strong graphic statement.
