St. Columban Parish - Day Chapel (Artwork #134) Loveland, Ohio
Size: 3'-0" x 9'-8" overall each, six total.
The Day Chapel windows abstractly bespeak the Corporal Acts of Mercy. Because Corporal acts of Mercy humanize our world, making it a gentler, kinder place to live, the design and coloration is soft, peaceful, calm. A river runs through the landscape, honoring Loveland’s proximity to the Little Miami River and O’Bannon Creek. The river also symbolizes the flow of life. The evening light reflecting on the river (of our lives), suggestive that Corporal acts of Mercy, offered to others along life’s path, are highly valued jewels of our legacy.
Painted enamels, applied to the glass and fired in a kiln, allow the colors to blend together softly. Since the windows are on separate walls of the small octagonal chapel, the colors envelope the space, seeming to embrace the viewer. Because the windows will never be viewed all at once, the design, which runs continuously through all the windows, has been designed to communicate the feel of the whole, in each individual panel.
