University Place - Great Room
(Artwork #135)
West Lafayette, Indiana
Honorable Mention, Visual Arts Awards, Ministry & Liturgy Magazine

Size: 11'-5" x 8'-5"

The Great Room is a conference room that will also be used for religious services. In keeping with the facility’s ties to academia, the design equates education with the planting of the of seed of knowledge, and the ripple effect that it creates.

Thought is like a flower, always evolving, always becoming. Flowers and education both have life stages that drift one into the other, never ending. The seed of an idea is planted in one’s mind, where it is pondered. It matures slowly, then is shared again. This evolution of shared thought, a uniquely human quality, allows for great sophistication of thought with unimaginable potential.

The inquisitive, exploratory nature inherent to the human spirit, and honed sharply by the academic community, energizes the educational engine. The desire to receive and share knowledge creates a ripple like cycle where the student becomes the teacher, inevitably by trade or vocation. Knowledge is never static, it always moves outward, always finding another inquisitive mind to entertain.
