Design:
The overall design is intended to offer a comfortable welcome to people of all faiths, while acknowledging specifically those of the three monotheistic faiths, Christian, Jewish and Muslim. A repetitive grid pattern is reminiscent of the ornamentation of Islamic Mosques. The Hebrew inscription over the door nods to the Jewish faith. The four, recognizable symbols are elements of the Christian tradition, but speak to the others as well.
Symbols, as viewed right to left:
- Water - The brown suggests the shore of a stream, the blue represents water and the gray forms are boulders in the stream.
- Fire - The yellow suggests the center of a fire while the red form is a flame.
- Call to worship - The “call to worship” is featured in the door panel and transom because it is through the door of a sacred space that you pass for the purpose of worship. The wide vertical lines suggest sanctuary doors slightly open, giving an inviting hint of that which lies beyond. The plumb line on the right suggests structures of architectural significance, the off plumb line on the left suggests humble places of worship. The two wide horizontal lines in the middle of the door suggest the relaxed position of a hosts hands, just before he spreads them wide in a gesture of welcome. The cornerstone at the top of the door signifies that our faith is that which offers stability and balance to our lives.
- Vine - Vines twine around a segment of a tree.
- Light - A flow of colors suggest sunlight dancing on a waters surface. A wide line around the main sun area is not consistent in thickness, which signifies that the heart is open to the “Light”.
