Peru State College - Eastern Windows
(Artwork #147b-f)
Peru, Nebraska
Size: 56” high x 51” long x 2” deep, each.

Five stained glass windows were created for the eastern wall of the library. Each panel represented a previous use of the building in the past: A chapel, a gymnasium, a science building, the art department and a roller rink. The windows are displayed in order of the building's use, from left to right, starting at the fireplace reading area in the library.

Design concepts are given with the detailed views, below. Shown here are "The Chapel" and "The Gymnasium" panels.

"The Science Building" & "The Art Department."
"The Chapel"

The foundation of this stained glass design is the two purple forms that represent the “Holy Book”, a fundamental, guiding element for all faiths. The shape and placement suggest that the Book is open, the color used is one of dignity, thereby commanding respect. Since fire is a universal symbol of spiritual significance, it is represented prominently with the orange form. The lines at the top of the “fire” represent the spoken word, the teachings, the means by which one’s faith comes to burn with a passion in the soul. The white wisp that flows within the left purple form is symbolic of communing with a Greater Power. This may be the journey of a softly spoken prayer, or connecting with the power of one’s inner spirit. The pink form, with its opened seed/egg shape, speaks of spiritual renewal and new life, one of the many rewards of living true to one’s faith. There is a pathway of white glass that flows diagonally through the colored forms. White is chosen because it is the color of purity and of holiness. This reminds us that life is a journey, and the importance of honoring the beliefs we embrace every step of the way, be they traditional religion or abstract philosophy.
"The Gymnasium"

Although a gymnasium accommodates many activities, basketball is surely one of the most notable. Basketball is offered in standard gym classes, is played spontaneously between friends, and every gym has a net and the appropriate lines painted on the floor. Because of its common association with the gym environment, this stained glass design uses basketball to represent the theme of “The Gymnasium”. The green form represents the basketball backboard. The blue form is a player, arm pausing in mid-motion after sending the ball (red) solidly into the orange basket. The player and basket are leaping forms because basketball is all about “lift”. The dancing white wisps show the perfect arc of the ball as it finds the net.

"The Science Building"

The prominent brown form in this stained glass window represents a scientific beaker, a piece of equipment commonly used within the scientific community. The pink and blue forms are hands raising the beaker high, eager to observe what has occurred within. That chemical process is shown by the black dots inside the beaker. The varied size, shape and colors of the hand forms celebrate the great diversity of individuals pursuing a path in science.
"The Art Department"

The orange forms in this stained glass window represent a splayed paintbrush, applying blue paint to a canvas. The wide angled border line (bottom left) suggests the structured principles of the educational process that provide the foundation upon which artistic vision builds. Fine art, so full of life that it touches the very soul, is born of art theory combined with artistic intuition. This spirit of creativity, that restless need to create that burns ceaselessly within the heart of the artist, is represented by the dancing lines cascading from the top of the design to the bottom.
"The Roller Rink"

In this stained glass window, the brown forms suggest the wooden floors of the old roller rink. The sweep of red and the playful lines represents skaters busily darting this way and that with a sense of urgency, flowing with a graceful confidence, or perhaps wobbling precariously while holding the hand of a friend. The blue backdrop with white flecks represents those memorable times when the lights dimmed and a mirrored ball sent prisms of light onto the skaters, creating a magical dance with the lights.
